Love him or hate him, Donald Trump is turning out voters.
With ten primaries to go, the Republican front-runner has already received more votes than the party’s previous nominee Mitt Romney received during the entire 2012 primary campaign, according to the New York Post.
With rough 10.1 million votes received following Tuesday’s sweep of five northeastern states, the so-called “Acela primary,” Trump has about 200,000 more than Romney’s entire total in 2012.
George W. Bush holds the modern record for primary votes, acquiring 10.8 million in 2000, according to University of Minnesota political science professor Eric Ostermeier, the founder of the political news site Smart Politics.
With the GOP race down to three candidates and populous states such as California, New Jersey and Indiana coming up, the odds of Trump overtaking Bush are pretty favorable.
“In an election cycle with a high Republican turnout, his numbers are rising, even more so now that there’s only three candidates” Ostermeier told the Post.
Ostermeier pointed to Trump’s celebrity, media exposure and higher-than-usual interest in his over-the-top candidacy as reasons why the real estate tycoon is sure to break the record.
In an email to Politico, the political science professor said only eight candidates have won more than 7.5 million Republican primary votes since the advent of the modern primary and caucus system — Ronald Reagan received about 7.7 million votes in 1980.
Here are the numbers since Reagan’s 1980 victory, according to the Federalist Papers Project:
- Ronald Reagan 1980: 7.7 Million (Won the general)
- Ronald Reagan 1984: 6.4 Million (Won the general)
- George H.W. Bush 1988: 8.2 Million (Won the general)
- George H.W. Bush 1992: 9.2 Million (Lost the general)
- Bob Dole 1996: 8.4 Million (Lost the general)
- George W. Bus 2000: 10.8 Million (Won the general)
- George W. Bush 2004: 7.6 Million (Won the general)
- John McCain 2008: 9.9 Million (Lost the general)
- Mitt Romney 2012: 5.9 Million (Lost the general)
Prominent, albeit temperamental Trump supporter Ann Coulter wasted little time sharing the good news on Twitter, noting that Trump’s on track to get the most votes “maybe ever.” It’s worth noting that her guy is getting more votes because there are more people voting — including people voting for someone other than Trump.

The reaction on social media was mixed, and there were plenty of skeptics. Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
@AnnCoulter @politico Trump hated & feared by both sides, GOP Establishment & the Progressive/Socialist Dems. Doing something right! #Trump
