The Florida zookeeper who was mauled to death by a Tiger violated zoo policy.
Andrew Aiken, the Palm Beach Zoo president and chief executive said Stacey Konwiser, known as “the tiger whisperer” entered a part of the tiger enclosure which the animal had access to in violation of policy, according to a statement released on Friday.
WSVN-TV – 7NEWS Miami Ft. Lauderdale News, Weather, Deco
“The facts as we know them confirm that one of our most senior and experienced animal experts who was highly qualified and a leader in her zookeeper position, secured a portion of the tiger night house with a tiger in it, and then entered that same portion of the night house after it was clearly designated as accessible by a tiger. Under Palm Beach Zoo policy, zoo employees are never allowed to enter a tiger enclosure to which the animal has access” the statement read.
Naki Carter, a spokesman for the zoo, said the tiger was not on display when the attack occurred.
“She is someone that absolutely loved everything that had to do with keeping these tigers and seeing that they were enriched daily,” Carter told WSVN, “and I know that just her love for them, if you knew her, then you knew about her love for these creatures.”
The incident is still under investigation but zoo officials have said the tiger will not be put down.
