Hollywood conservatives may be left out in the cold this election cycle.
The secretive group for conservatives in Hollywood known as “Friends of Abe” has apparently dissolved following alleged infighting among members about GOP front-runner Donald Trump, according to an exclusive report by the Guardian.
Famous conservatives like Jon Voight, Jerry Bruckheimer and Kelsey Grammer were all reported members of the organization, but learned this week that the group would soon disband.
“Effective immediately, we are going to begin to wind down the 501 c3 organization, bring the sustaining membership dues to an end, and do away with the costly infrastructure and the abespal.com website,” said executives of the group in an email, according to the Guardian.
“Today, because we have been successful in creating a community that extends far beyond our events, people just don’t feel as much of a need to show up for every speaker or bar night, and fewer people pay the dues that help us maintain that large infrastructure,” the organization said in the email.
Executives of the group went on to say that the notice “means an end to the standing organization, but not an end to the mission,” citing that members will remain confidential and conservatives will still meet for discussions on issues.
For multiple Hollywood conservatives, the Guardian report noted that they are not particularly happy with the weakening of the group, as many feel as though they cannot openly discuss politics with Hollywood’s largely liberal ideologues.
“As a conservative, if you expressed your political views at work you would be weeded out,” filmmaker Jack Marino told the Guardian. “At Abe events we could get together over dinner and hang out with our own kind and speak freely.”
The group, which was formed in 2005 and named after Abraham Lincoln, worked like a version of the mafia. Members were sworn to secrecy and the group was never to be discussed out and among Hollywood stars.
‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ star Patricia Heaton and Clint Eastwood were both famous members of the organization, which once hosted the late US Supreme Court Antonin Scalia for an event.
