And let that be a lesson to you.
Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz suffered a drubbing in the New York primary Tuesday night, finishing dead last with just 14.5 percent of the vote, with even John Kasich besting him.
Cruz’s conservative values were not likely to be embraced by too many New Yorkers, but his chances were not helped by his previous dig on “New York values.”
Either way, with 95 delegates for the taking, the candidate came out of Tuesday’s contest with zero.
“[By] going after Trump’s home state, Cruz handed Trump a political promissory note that will be cashed in Tuesday in New York’s primary,” Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. wrote Tuesday in a piece titled, “Ted Cruz and the revenge of New York values.”
Dionne’s point was that Cruz “forgot that there are conservative New York values, too.”
Cruz attacked Trump’s “New York values” in edging out his rival in the Iowa caucus in February, but the tactic came back to bite him on Tuesday. He was referring to “the values of the elite liberals” in the state, but that got lost in the mix after Trump passionately defended “New York values” during a GOP debate by tying them to the attacks on 9/11 — it may have been the Republican front-runners finest hour of all the debates.
Odd are, with five neighboring states going to the polls next Tuesday and a total of 118 delegates at stake, Cruz likely has yet to live down his ill-advised remark.
Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island vote on April 26.
