File this under “black privilege.”
Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio continue to deal with the fallout over an ill-advised skit that joked about “CP time” — short for “colored people time” — but they’re not the first politicians to play on the stereotype that black people often run late.
But there is a difference… as in the shade of one’s skin.
Turns out, then-Sen. Barack Obama joked about running late in an attempt to prove that he was “black enough” back when his “blackness” was being questioned.
The Seattle Times reported on August, 11, 2007:
Barack Obama was 20 minutes late for a speech to thousands of black journalists gathered in Las Vegas. So when the Illinois senator and presidential contender finally made it to the stage Friday, he alluded to “CP time,” or colored people’s time, a long-running, self-deprecating joke among blacks about stereotypical assumptions that they are never on time.
“I want to apologize for being a little bit late,” Obama said at the time. “But, you guys keep on asking whether I’m black enough.”
“Uh-huh! That’s right! So, I figured I’d stroll in about ten minutes after the deadline,” he continued. “I’ve been holding that in my pocket for a while.”
