The Clintons have been thinking about a Donald Trump presidency for decades now.

Newly released documents reveal never-before-seen notes from former President Bill Clinton’s administration in which a Trump presidency is discussed, according to a report by CNN.

Back in October of 1999, administration aides for Clinton mapped out exactly why Trump would run for president, pointing to Clinton’s Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, and anticipating that the media would ask Clinton a question about it.

“Is this the result of a demeaning of the office that you’ve contributed to?” read one of the notes obtained by CNN from the White House briefing book.

Clinton’s aides questioned if the president’s sex scandal was to blame for the rise of celebrity interest in running for the presidency.

“I think it may say something about the way the media covers politics these days, but I have the utmost confidence in the American people to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Regardless of who runs for president or how they’re covered, the public eventually sees through all the smoke and mirrors. And they, after all, have the ultimate power at the ballot box,” read the pre-planned answer Clinton was supposed to give if asked about Trump.

Around the same time in 1999, Trump announced the creation of his presidential exploratory committee which considered whether or not the New York business mogul should run on the Reform Party ticket the following year in 2000.
