With the fallout building over a racially insensitive joke about “CP time,” short for “colored people time,” Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton wasted little time in manning up … and blaming her cohort New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The phrase was part of a skit Clinton and de Blasio participated in last week at the Inner Circle Show, a dinner modeled after the Gridiron Club held annually in New York City where politicians are satirized by local political reporters.
Clinton was asked about the ill-advised joke during an interview with Cosmopolitan.
“Well, look, it was Mayor de Blasio’s skit,” she immediately deferred. “He has addressed it, and I will really defer to him because it is something that he’s already talked about.”
A weak response, no doubt, but Clinton’s media allies are sure to be content with it.
As for de Blasio addressing it, the mayor told CNN on Monday that “people are missing the point.”
“It was clearly a staged show. It was a scripted show,” he said. “The whole idea was to do the counter-intuitive by saying ‘cautious politician time.'”
Clinton delivered the “cautious politician time” punch line.
“Every actor thought it was a joke on a different convention,” de Blasio added. “That was the whole idea. I think people are missing the point here.”
In other words, Clinton blames de Blasio who says she was in on it.
The reaction on social media could be summed up in three words shared by one user: “Stay classy, Hill.”

@anniekarni @Cosmopolitan Awful judgment to refer to and perpetuate a racist stereotype AND throws #Blasio under the bus. Stay classy, Hill.

@anniekarni I’m starting to think she’s honestly schizophrenic. “Yes, I was part of that yesterday, but it was his idea and I’ve evolved.”
