A judge in Georgia took the time to teach some teenagers what going to prison is really like; a lesson that frightened many to tears.
Judge Verda Colvin spoke to teenagers in her courtroom as part of the “Consider the Consequences” program of the Bibb County Sheriff’s office and explained to them the consequences of their actions.
She pulled out a body bag and told the teens that the direction they were heading would put them in either of two places: the corpse body bag or prison.
“You can have the ultimate experience — you can be in this body bag,” Colvin told them. “And the only way somebody will know you’re in here is this tag with your name on it. What do you wanna do?”
She explained to them that “anybody can be nothing” so they ought to start bettering their lives and be somebody.
“I am sick and tired of seeing people who look like you and come in my courtroom, and I have to sentence them to prison,” she said.
“And then you hear them fussing on TV about African Americans being in the prison system. Well, guess what, if you don’t do what it takes out there, you won’t be a part of it,” she told the tearful teens.
And she explained to them the horrors that come along with being in prison.
“Somebody raping you in the middle of the night, and there’s nothing you can do but just lay there. Cause guess what — everybody got to get their turn. So it’s your turn, cause you’re the new meat on the block,” she said.
Acknowledging the tears beginning to flow from some of the teens, Colvin also offered some loving inspiration.
“You are special, and you are uniquely made, and nobody else can do what you’re supposed to do in this world. Nobody else. And if you don’t do it, we won’t have it.”
