Racial tensions reached a breaking point Saturday during a protest of a Nation of Islam mosque.
Protesters from the Bureau of American Islamic Relations, an anti-radical Islam group, faced off with counter protesters from the New Black Panther Party in South Dallas prompting police to intervene, the Dallas Morning News reported.
The BAIR members, clad in skeleton masks and armed with semi-automatic weapons, came face to face with members of the NBPP, many of whom were also armed.
While there were no physical altercations, the police advised the BAIR members to leave for their own safety as they were severely outnumbered.
The Panthers, recognized by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group, claimed victory and chanted “black power” as the BAIR members left, according to the Morning News.
“This is what they fear — the black man,” activist Olinka Green told the Morning News. “This is what America fears.
“It’s a people’s victory here in South Dallas today,” Yafeuh Balogun of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club added.
BAIR claimed on its Facebook page that its intent was to protest what it considers an anti-American group.
“We cannot stand by while all these different anti-American, Arab radical Islamists team up with Nation of Islam/Black Panthers and white, anti-American anarchist groups, joining together in the goal of destroying our Country and killing innocent people to gain Dominance through fear!” the Facebook invite to the protest read.
