It’s not everyday that a college student finds themselves thrust into the middle of a hotly contested presidential election.
Samantha Rivera, a journalism major at DePaul University, found herself front and center in the short-lived sex scandal involving Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz when her picture was used to create a fake Twitter account from a woman claiming to be one of his alleged mistresses, according to WLS-TV.
The fictional account was set up under the name Jennifer Carr, supposedly a writer for the Los Angeles Times who claimed to be involved in a dalliance with Cruz — Carr isn’t real, the ABC affiliate noted. The account has since been reported and removed.
“This person was using my profile picture to pose as one of Ted Cruz’ mistresses,” Rivera said. “I was completely dumbfounded, you know, who would do this?”
Rivera, a radio host for Univision’s La Hora Picante, said she has never met Cruz and told WLS-TV that her father did some digging around and was able to trace the fake account to another account.
“He used the Jennifer Carr account to retweet a bunch of his stuff, and from there, they led to his account,” she said.
The junior said she is concerned about a loss of privacy.
“I was always careful about what I put on social media,” Rivera said, “but with this, it scares me a lot more in terms of privacy.”
