Donald Trump’s call for a pullback of our support for NATO highlights the extreme difference between the beltway elite and ordinary Americans who can’t for the life of them understand why a nation that’s 20 trillion dollars in debt has any business supporting and policing the rest of the world.
Trump isn’t alone, but from some of the looks he’s getting from media types you’d think maybe he grew a second nose. In fact, three different defense secretaries, Robert Gates, Leon Panetta, and Chuck Hagel, have all expressed frustration with NATO at different times. According to Hagel, “America’s defense spending is three times our allies’ combined defense spending.”
The United States, essentially a broke nation, is currently spending twice as much on NATO as the second largest spending country to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars … and for what? So Europe can cut defense spending and foot the bill for their ginormous welfare state?
Stanford military historian Victor Davis Hanson contends that while NATO once served an important purpose, “We tend to subsidize the defense of Europe, and then they divert those monies for social programs. It’s basically a U.S.-led defense organization.”
Donald Trump, sounding a lot like Rand Paul, says we can’t go around being the policemen of the world. Beltway Republicans don’t like that because they are living in a fantasy world, but those of us who can do basic mathematics appreciate Trump’s pragmatism and candor.
Hillary Clinton says she’s getting “thank you” messages from European leaders fearing the end of the gravy train. Honestly, is that really a surprise?
In an interview with Eric Bolling on “The O’Reilly Factor” Thursday night, Trump said, “I don’t want to disband NATO, but I don’t want to pay the majority of the costs of NATO either…”
Like trade and every other issue, Trump just wants America and Americans to be treated fairly. For those hellbent on maintaining the status quo, apparently that’s too much to ask.
