A New York judge pointed out one instance where he said black lives don’t matter.
As he passed down the sentence of 24 to 26 years for a 2015 shooting of a black man, Justice Edward McLaughlin laced into the defendant, Tareek Arnold, the New York Post reported.
“Black lives matter,” he said. “I have heard it, I know it, but the sad fact is, in this courtroom, so often what happens is manifestations of the fact that black lives don’t matter to black people with guns.”
Arnold’s victim, Jamal McCaskill, who survived the shooting, actually testified in 24-year-old Arnold’s defense.
A fact the judge also did not approve of.
“The video shows that Mr. McCaskill is an abject liar,” he said.
Justice McLaughlin also slammed the defense attorneys who argued for a more lenient sentence because Arnold has a young child.
“Do not ask a judge in this room, in this building, or in this system to somehow make amends for the people who commit violent acts and who by their violent acts wind up leaving people orphaned, abandoned, fatherless, et cetera,” he said.
