Watch dramatic SWAT team rescue of woman held hostage by ex-boyfriend

The breathtaking moment a hostage was saved from her gun-wielding ex-boyfriend who had shot her was caught on a news crew’s video.

The woman, Kristin Bauer, was held hostage for hours outside of a Redlands, California, Office Depot by her ex-boyfriend Andrew Bermudez before police shot and killed the assailant and dragged Bauer to safety, CBS News reported.

Bauer was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

“He did fire at her. The officers fired at him to try to stop that threat and be able to try to save her life,” Redlands Police Chief Mark Garcia said at a press conference Thursday.

“He came to the store looking for her. She tried to get away and he followed her out of the store. At one point, he did fire a round in the store,” he added.

Bauer’s father Gregory Bauer, who identified Bermudez, was on the phone with his daughter for part of the saga.

“It was like background noise,” Bauer said. “She kept telling him, ‘You gotta let me go. You gotta let me go,’ and he said, ‘I’m not afraid to die,'” he told CBS News.

Mr. Bauer said that Bermudez was normally quiet and that something must have “triggered” him.
