Donald Trump stood by his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, when asked about an incident at a rally in Arizona on Saturday where a protester appeared to be grabbed by the collar from behind, saying he gives Lewandowski “credit for having spirit.”
The Republican front-runner called in Sunday to ABC’s “This Week,” and host George Stephanopoulos asked him about the incident.
“Why is your campaign manager out in the crowd engaging protesters?” Stephanopoulos asked.
Trump said “the police at the arena, the security, was a little bit lax,” and added that there were signs in the area Lewandowski was in that were “horrendous.”
“I give him credit for having spirit,” the real estate tycoon said. “He wanted to take down those horrible, profanity-laced signs.”

Trump denied his campaign manager was the one grabbing the man, saying Lewandowski “didn’t touch the protester.” This is consistent with a statement the campaign released Saturday saying the man “was pulled from behind by the man to Lewandowski’s left.”
