Angry Sanders darts from interview after question about ‘ambushed’ wife, Sheriff Arpaio

Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders abruptly ended an interview with an NBC affiliate in Phoenix on Friday after he was asked about his wife meeting with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Sanders wife, Jane, visited Arpaio’s famed Tent City on Wednesday and got into a debate with the sheriff about conditions in the county jail. The candidate responded the following day by calling Arpaio a “bully” and saying the sheriff “ambushed” his wife and had better “watch out” if Sanders is elected president.

KPNX 12 News reporter Brahm Resnick mentioned the meeting and it clearly struck a nerve with Sanders.

“Let me just tell you something, what Joe Arpaio is doing is an outrage,” Sanders interjected before the reporter finished his question. “My wife went to look at the so-called Tent City, which is something that should not exist. The fact that he crashed her meeting is, to me, very very wrong. Not something that he should have done.”

“Thank you very much,” Sanders said as he stood up and removed his microphone.

Resnick tried to ask Sanders whether he would accept a spot as vice president, but Sanders was done.

“First candidate who’s ever walked away,” Resnick said out loud.

“I didn’t walk away,” Sanders said in response. “I told you, you have four minutes and you had more than four minutes.”

The candidate reiterated that he didn’t walk away and that Resnick had more than the allotted time.

“I’m not going to squabble with you,” Resnick told Sanders, who sat back down as the reporter walked off.
