Ousted MSNBC personality Melissa Harris-Perry poured her heart out to the women of ABC’s “The View” on Monday as she compared her departure from the cable news channel to the end of a bad relationship.
Perry said the network preempted her show several times and eventually reached out to her to come back to “read the news” but not to have the “Melissa-Harris Perry Show” back.
While she wrote an email to her team saying she wouldn’t be a “token” or a “mammy,” she told “The View” hosts that she didn’t believe her removal was racist.
But in typical Harris-Perry fashion, she did find a racial component in her dismissal.
“Did I think it was racialized? Not in the sense of like, they’re coming after Melissa for being black. Do I think it has racial implications? A hundred percent,” she said. “Our show had the most diverse guests on cable news, period. It just is an empirical reality. Taking this show off the air, even if you put me individually back on as a host, meant that the folks who sat at our table — whether they were transgender women of color, whether they were latino Republicans — they just weren’t going to be there anymore because we were the folks who put them on air each and every week.”
