It’s a given in politics that nothing says “establishment” better than the Bush name.
Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz made his name standing up to the political establishment, which makes it all the more remarkable that Neil Bush, younger brother to George W. and Jeb, has joined Cruz’s national finance team.
The younger Bush, a Houston-area businessman and philanthropist, and his wife Maria were among 13 new bundlers added to the campaign, CNN reported on Tuesday.
“I am thrilled to welcome these new members to our outstanding team,” Cruz said in a statement. “This race is winnowing down between two candidates and this is further testament that conservatives are continuing to unite behind this campaign.”
The campaign said it has raised more than $70 million since Cruz began his bid for the White House.
CNN noted that over the years, Cruz has had a “fraught relationship with the Bush clan.”
Cruz worked on George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign, but since then he has largely charted his own course in Texas politics. He has been critical of George W. Bush’s presidency on the campaign trail, and the former president returned the favor by telling a private audience in October that he just does “not like that guy.”
And while the likelihood of the former president getting on board with Cruz may be slim, brother Jeb is still a free agent. After withdrawing from the race, the former Florida governor is sitting on the sidelines while his now ex-protege Marco Rubio is in the political fight of his life in that state’s upcoming primary.
All of which suggests that along with “establishment,” folks may also start associating the term “petty” with the Bush clan.
But Neil Bush is sure about Cruz in a one-on-one match up with Republican front-runner Donald Trump, telling Fox News’ Neil Cavuto on Tuesday that “Trump will go down. Ted Cruz will crush Trump.”
