Ted Cruz is not interested in stopping Donald Trump’s rise to the Republican presidential nomination via a brokered convention.
“Any time you hear someone talking about a brokered convention, it is the Washington establishment in a fevered frenzy, they are really frustrated because all their chosen candidates, their golden children, the voters keep rejecting,” he told the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday.
“They seized on this master plan. We go to a brokered convention, and the D.C. power brokers will drop someone in who is exactly to the liking of the Washington establishment. If that would happen, we will have a manifest revolt on our hands all across this country,” he said.
The Texas senator was responding to former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s call to split the votes in upcoming primaries in order to prevent Trump from reaching the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination outright.
Trump currently has 329, and Cruz, his closest competitor, has 231.
Both are seen as outsiders to the establishment wing of the party.
Cruz contended the only way to defeat Trump would be for the voters to do it in the elections.
“If you want to beat Donald Trump here’s how you do it. You beat Donald Trump with the voters!” he said.
