The state of Alabama has blocked its towns from increasing minimum wage on their own.
On Thursday Gov. Robert Bentley signed the new law prohibiting towns from raising their minimum wage on Thursday, right before Birmingham was about to raise its own to $10.10 per hour.
Republican State Sen. Jabo Waggoner supports the new law and said that raising the minimum wage would cut entry-level jobs.
“We want businesses to expand and create more jobs – not cut entry-level jobs because of a patchwork of local minimum wages causes operating costs to rise. Our actions today will create predictability and consistency for Alabama’s economy, which benefits everyone,” he said according to Fox News.
His Democrat opponents, who opposed the bill as it passed in the state senate an hour before the governor signed it, disagreed.
“Somebody has to recognize that we have a working-poor class of people that are not just in Birmingham,” Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison, who is sponsoring a bill to make the state’s minimum wage $10.10, said.
“We don’t move until we’re forced to move. For once, I’d like for this legislative body to be the leader,” she said.
It could be that Republicans in the state took notice of what happened in Seattle when order screens moved in to take the place of minimum wage employees after the city raised its minimum wage.
Alabama currently has no minimum wage and uses the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour.
