New York Giants star turns tables, sues ESPN reporter for releasing his medical records

Talk about turning the tables.

In what promises to be a precedent setting move, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has filed a lawsuit against ESPN and reporter Adam Schefter for posting his private medical records online for all to see, the New York Post reported.

Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated following a July 4 fireworks mishap in the Miami area and the lawsuit claims Schefter “improperly obtained” the defensive end’s medical chart and released it out of a “selfish desire to ‘break news.’”

The NFL player was treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, according to his attorneys.

Schefter has a reputation for breaking news, and he posted Pierre-Paul’s classified medical records on Twitter. The reporter had around 4 million followers at the time, according to the suit.

The lawsuit says that while Pierre-Paul’s injury may have been “a matter of legitimate public concern,” the “chart was not,” the Post reported

“This action arises out of ESPN reporter Schefter’s blatant disregard for the private and confidential nature of plaintiff’s medical records, all so Schefter could show the world that he had ‘supporting proof’ of a surgical procedure,” the suit says.

In a July 2015 Sports Illustrated interview, the ESPN reporter admitted that when it came to protecting Pierre-Paul’s medical records, he “could and should have done even more here due to the sensitivity of the situation.”

Two employees at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital were fired over the chart being turned over to Schefter.

The lawsuit, filed in Miami Dade County as a civil suit, does not specify money damages.
