While our politicians wax poetically about all the effort put into improving the experience at Veterans Affairs medical centers, America’s military veterans dependent on that care continue to experience abysmal conditions.
Case in point: Massachusetts Army veteran Dennis Magnasco’s recent attempt to simply make an appointment at a VA hospital proves insurmountable.
Fortunately, the vet had the good sense to video his experience and post it on Facebook — the video has been seen more than one million times — and it has prompted Congress to act, according to Fox News.
Or, at least, they say they’re going to act. Again.
In the video, Magnasco is sent in a maddening circle while trying to navigate the VA’s automated phone system. For nearly five minutes he endures the merry-go-round, each time ending up where he started.
Why We Need the Faster Care for Veterans Act Watch as Dennis, Army veteran and one of the District Representatives on my staff, tries to schedule his doctor’s appointment at the VA. This is unacceptable. Our returning service men and women deserve better. I’m committed to doing everything I can to improve this flawed system and introduced the bipartisan Faster Care for Veterans Act to bring veteran health care into the 21st century. #fastercareforvets

Magnasco works for and is represented by U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, a fellow Iraq War veteran, who joined “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday to discuss a bill he’s pushing that would allow vets to make appointments directly online using their phones.
Called the Faster Care for Veterans Act, it’s an 18-month pilot program that Moulton said is more efficient than a planned $623 million revamp of the VA appointment-making process (and Americans wonder why the U.S. is more than $19 trillion in debt).
“Let’s just take that private sector innovation, give it to veterans today,” the Democratic lawmaker said, “rather than waiting for the next five years and spending an awful lot of taxpayer dollars to get it done.”
