Even though it marks the first race of the season, the Daytona 500 is referred to as the “Super Bowl of NASCAR.” Winning the race is BIG –so big that the winners are called “Daytona 500 champions” for the rest of their lives.
The 2016 race ran on Sunday and driver Denny Hamlin won the event for the first time in his 12 year career. The veteran driver struggled mightily to contain his emotions while being interviewed in Victory Lane — and now we know why.
As special as the win was — it was the closest-ever finish of the Daytona 500 — Hamlin’s victory took on a mythical feel when the 35-year-old driver posted on social media a note he wrote in elementary school in 1987 about one day winning the race.
“It’s real now,” Hamlin wrote of the note he penned as a 7-year-old.
