The White House announced on Wednesday that President Barack Obama will not attend Justice Antonin Scalia’s funeral Saturday.
Obama andĀ first lady Michelle will pay their respects Friday at the Supreme Court, where Scalia lies in repose, and Vice President Joe Biden and wife Jill will attend the funeral.
When asked if Obama will go golfing on Saturday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said he was unaware of the president’s plans for the day but said ObamaĀ believes it is important to honor Scalia’s life and service.
Apparently,Ā just not important enough to attend his funeral.
Surprisingly, MSNBC host Christopher Hayes summed things up well with this subtle advice:
Some amazing advice my mom gave me once: "If you're wondering whether you should go to the funeral, you should go to the funeral."

The reaction from most social media users — other than the shock of agreeing with Hayes — is that the president should attend Saturday’s service for Scalia.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
Holy crap. I agree with @chrislhayes on something?????? https://t.co/Mvx0uujq9r

@chrislhayes That is some deeply Catholic “listen to the voice of your future guilt” advice right there. Well-executed.

@chrislhayes @barner Always go to the funeral. It means a lot to the living.

@chrislhayes @POTUS should definitely attend. It’s the Presidential thing to do. It’s the right thing to do. #Scalia
ā TheLiberalLandscaper (@The_Lawn_Doctor) February 17, 2016
@catemb The problem here is that @POTUS doesn’t possess an ounce of respect for anyone except himself. @chrislhayes
ā Ree Fungorio (@ReeFungorio) February 18, 2016
@chrislhayes Most disrespectful POTUS ever
ā Beatlegal09 (@Beatlegal09) February 18, 2016
@chrislhayes never thought I’d retweet someone from MSNBC because I agree with them but there is always a first. Smart mom.

@chrislhayes We’ll probably never agree politically, however I have nothing but respect for you for making this statement. Well said.
ā Mead (@SOTMead) February 17, 2016
@chrislhayes @benshapiro Smart mom. Too bad the President’s mother never gave him that good advise. Obama is just so classless.
