Suffice it to say that actress and Fox News contributor Stacey Dash believes actors and actresses should be selected for the content of their talent, not the color of their skin.
And she doesn’t care if people choose to hate her for it.
Countering the outcry from many over white actor Joseph Fiennes being cast to play Michael Jackson in an upcoming film, Dash celebrated the decision on her Patheos blog, saying Hollywood just threw out the âCaucasian-only card.â
Even if the “king of pop” felt different about being played by a white actor.
“I say, ‘BRAVO!'” Dash wrote. “I’m sick and tired of being told, ‘Sorry, Stacey, this is a Caucasian-only role.’ Counterintuitively, the decision by Hollywood – which looks like a diss to blacks – is actually what we’ve been saying all along: roles should NOT be based on color.”
She then pointed to the currently popular Broadway play “Hamilton,” which features a black actor as Thomas Jefferson and a Puerto Rican as Alexander Hamilton.
“I don’t care about the race of the actors portraying historical figures and I can’t wait to see Joseph’s portrayal of Jackson,” she said. “It’ll be amazing as long as he plays himself truthfully and authentically.”
An outspoken critic of those who bemoaned the lack of diversity among this year’s Oscar nominees, Dash said the decision to cast Fiennes in the role also works to the advantage of black actors.
“This decision throws that white-only card out the window,” she insisted. “They canât look at black actors and say, ‘Sorry this role is Caucasian-only.'”
She went on to say that “roles should not be dictated by race,” and understands that she is asking for a lot. Â
“Yes, Iâm going against the flow of traffic,” the actress concluded. “Yes, I will receive hate over this. Guess what? I donât care. I have wingsâĤ.”
