Watch: Rand Paul calls it quits in run for White House

Struggling to remain relevant in the polls — and possibly tired of fighting with the networks for air time  — Republican presidential contender Rand Paul announced that he has dropped out of the race for the White House.

“It’s been an incredible honor to run a principled campaign for the White House,” Paul said Wednesday in a statement, Politico reported. “Today, I will end where I began, ready and willing to fight for the cause of Liberty.”

“Across the country thousands upon thousands of young people flocked to our message of limited government, privacy, criminal justice reform and a reasonable foreign policy,” the Kentucky senator added. “Brushfires of Liberty were ignited, and those will carry on, as will I.”

After making the announcement, Paul posted a video on social media thanking his supporters:

Stating “the fight is far from over,” Paul said he will now focus on his reelection to the U.S. Senate.

“I will continue to carry the torch for Liberty in the United States Senate and I look forward to earning the privilege to represent the people of Kentucky for another term,” he said.

Garnering only 5 percent of the vote in Iowa, good for a fifth place finish, Politico reported that Paul “was projected to do much worse in next week’s New Hampshire primary, with recent polls showing him in ninth place.”

Bill Clinton is the only person in the last 40 years to win the presidency after losing both Iowa and New Hampshire, although rival Marco Rubio stressed Tuesday that this is an unusual election cycle with such a large field of viable candidates.
