Displaying a brilliance that may eventually propel him into the White House, Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz went after the critical school lunch crowd over the weekend in Iowa.
Accompanied by his wife, Heidi, the candidate seized on widespread discontent over First Lady Michelle Obama’s “healthy” intervention in school lunches. Understanding no one is happy unless mom is happy — and happy kids make for happy moms — the Texas senator had a message for “all the school aged kids” across America.
“When Heidi’s first lady, french fries are coming back to the cafeteria!” Cruz said to enthusiastic cheers, after being introduced by his wife. “Maybe it’s just me, but I kind of think cardboard belongs in the trays, and not in the meals.”
While some social media users mocked Cruz for targeting school-age children who can’t vote, others saw the humor, and potential brilliance, behind the remark.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
How's this for a campaign promise? @tedcruz: "If Heidi Cruz becomes First Lady, French fries are coming back to the cafeteria."

@LeonHWolf @RedState That’s the reason we need Bloomberg to run. He’d make the little brats eat green bean salad.
