Actor and director Marlon Wayans predicted that one day the Oscars will be so diverse, there won’t be a white person in sight.
Speaking to Huffington Post Live on Jan. 20, the star of the upcoming movie “Fifty Shades of Black” said that he anticipates in the near future, there will be a “blackout” of the Academy Awards.
“I guarantee you we’re going to find ourselves on the upside of the spectrum years from now, and it’s going to be a blackout at the Oscars where it’s nothing but black people,” he said without explaining how that would make them more diverse.
The actor weighed in on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy (along with Jada Smith, Al Sharpton, and President Obama) when he claimed, “It’s not the first year we got snubbed. We get snubbed every year.”
Apparently, Wayans missed the 2001 Oscars where Denzel Washington won the best actor award for his role in “Training Day,” and Halle Berry won the best actress award for “Monster’s Ball.”
He blamed the supposed diversity problem on the alleged lack of financing for black projects in Hollywood.
“We don’t have the budgets to make $150 million movie with all those camera angles done in the mountains in Vancouver. No, we get like $5 to 10 million. We got 20 days to film a picture. It’s not going to be as beautiful, so as we grow, that’s something that we’ll attack,” Wayans said.
“It’s never our ending. It’s always our beginning, a new beginning, and I guarantee you we’re going to find ourselves on the upside of the spectrum years from now, and it’s going to be a blackout at the Oscars where it’s nothing but black people,” he added.
