A group of Texas cheerleaders showing their Christian faith have been vindicated.
On Friday, the state’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of the girls who sometimes chose to have Bible verses on their banners with sayings like “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”
The Kountze school district originally stopped the girls from displaying the banners but later acquiesced and agreed to allow them, Fox News reported.
The justices, however, said the ruling was still needed because the district said it retained the right to reject future banners.
The cheerleaders have been supported by several state politicians including Gov. Greg Abbott and Congressman Brian Babin.
“At a time when religious liberty is under assault nationwide, this ruling is a welcome reminder that the Constitution protects people of faith—and a welcome rebuke to government agencies that try to play games with our rights,” Babin said in a statement.
Attorney General Ken Paxton also praised the ruling Friday.
“Religious liberty, deemed by our nation’s founders as the ‘First Freedom,’ is the foundation upon which our society has been built,” he said.
