Listen to Michael Jackson tell Oprah how ‘horrifying’ it would be to be played by a white actor

An old video of Michael Jackson has resurfaced after 23 years.

The video comes from an interview Jackson did with Oprah Winfrey in 1993 in which she asked him about a rumor going around at the time that he wanted to have “a little white boy” play him in a Pepsi commercial.

The choice of white actor Joseph Fiennes to play Jackson in a movie about his life has become a hot topic, particularly with Hollywood scrambling to prove it’s not racist.

“That’s the most ridiculous, horrifying story I’ve ever heard. It’s crazy. Why would I want a white child to play me? I’m a black American. I am proud to be a black American. I am proud of my race. I am proud of who I am,” Jackson shot back angrily.

“It’s my face as a child in the commercial,” he continued. “Me when I was little. Why would I want a white child to play me? I’m a black American. I’m a black American. I’m proud to be a black American. I am proud of my race. I am proud of who I am. That’s like you [Oprah] wanting an oriental person to play you as a child. Does that make sense? Please people stop believing these horrifying stories.”

While this interview is being touted by many as proof Jackson would not want a white actor to play him it is important to note the interview postulated a white person would play Jackson as a child when his skin tone was decidedly darker.

That’s a sentiment Fiennes, the actor tapped to play Jackson in an upcoming comedy, told Entertainment Tonight.

“He definitely had an issue — a pigmentation issue — and that’s something I do believe,” Fiennes said. “He was probably closer to my color than his original color.”

Black talk show host Wendy Williams was more blunt when she said Jackson would be doing cartwheels in Heaven overjoyed that a white actor was playing him.
