A Gainesville, Florida, police officer followed up on a promise to bring backup to the next game of street ball with some neighborhood kids and did he ever deliver.
In a feel-good moment that rivals Tian Tian the giant panda, Officer Bobby White showed up with 7′ 1″ four-time NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal.
White responded to a noise complaint about kids playing basketball on January 15 and ended up playing with them. The “game” was captured on his dashcam and the Gainesville Police Department later posted the video on its Facebook page — it has been seen 14.6 million times as of this writing.
“We are going to let kids be kids,” the video says at the end. “We are going to focus on the ones committing crimes. #HoopsNotCrime.”
As White left that day, he can be heard telling the kids he would try to bring some backup with him next time.
Little did he know.
After seeing the viral video, O’Neal dropped by the station on Saturday to meet Officer White and offered to be his backup, the department noted its Facebook page.
“Told you I was gonna bring some backup, right? You guys ready?” White asked the kids on Saturday.
That’s when Shaq emerged from an SUV… and when he did, the kids were thrilled!
“These kids will never forget the day Shaq rolled up to their house to play ball,” the department wrote on its Facebook page along with this video:
