In a new interview with the Associated Press, Iran’s top diplomat slapped the hand of the United States.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told the AP that the US has an “addiction to sanctions” ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
He said the nuclear sanctions that the US called “crippling” were anything but, and that it better be careful about imposing new sanctions.
“The United States was not able to stop Iran’s nuclear program through sanctions,” he said. “They imposed what they called ‘crippling sanctions’ against Iran. In fact Iran’s nuclear program increased, by my last calculation, 200 fold.
“I think they should learn that they cannot impose their views on others by sanctions and pressure.”
Zarif said new U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran for its testing of ballistic missiles is an example of that addiction.
“We believe these sanctions are uncalled for. We believe the sanctions are illegal. They violate basic principles. The Iranian missile program is a legitimate defense program,” he told the AP.
“It shows that the United States has an addiction which has been very difficult for it to overcome,” he continued, adding that it is an “addiction to pressure, addiction to coercion, addiction to sanctions.”
He put the blame for Iran’s need to ramp up its defense on the U.S.
“The United States sells tens of billions of dollars worth of military equipment to the region,” Zarif said. “It’s just preposterous to cry wolf about Iran’s ballistic missile program while at the same time you are selling — the United States is selling — tens of billions of dollars worth of toys to our neighbors.”
