Dan Haggerty, star of a 1970s hit film and TV series depicting mountain-man and bear-whisperer Grizzly Adams, died Thursday of cancer at age 74.

Widely recognized for his role in “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams,” a movie-turned TV series, Haggerty was a stuntman and animal trainer in Hollywood before acting them out on screen.

The film was the seventh highest-grossing movie of 1974, and the series of the same title was created in hopes of strengthening its legacy.
