Baltimore Sun editor says legal gun owners should be treated just like sex offenders

Eager to support President Obama’s executive action for more restrictive gun measures, Baltimore Sun Deputy Editor Tricia Bishop wants to register legal gun owners in a searchable database… just like sex offenders.

Second Amendment be damned, Bishop called for the extreme measure in an op-ed ran on Thursday.

In the piece, Bishop said that she is “less afraid of the criminals wielding guns in Baltimore…than I am by those permitted gun owners.”

Seriously.

Never mind that on a per-capital basis, 2015 was the deadliest year ever in Baltimore. The city saw 344 homicides consisting of “mostly young, black men shot to death in a near-daily crush of violence,” the deputy editor’s employer reported.

Confessing her privilege as a white person, Bishop noted that the carnage in her city doesn’t directly impact her life rather, she worries about the children of legal gun owners (it’s always the children) who may come across a gun and “introduce that weapon to [her] daughter.”

Hence the gun owner registry — so she can keep her child away from the deviants.

“I’m not equating gun owners with predatory perverts, but the model is helpful here; I want a searchable database I can consult to find out whether my kid can have a play date at your house,” Bishop wrote.

Bishop points to toddlers accidentally shooting people and relies on “anecdotal evidence” to state that “guns in the home are far more likely to be used accidentally, in suicides or family disputes than in self-defense.”

Distrustful of the idea of gun safety, she adds that “it’s the simple presence of the weapon in the home and the possibilities it presents that terrify me.”

Bearing Arms’ Jenn Jacques responded on Monday, saying Bishops scheme is “steeped in ignorance.”

“The idea that gun-owning parents are a somehow such deviant people that elitist white suburban moms need to defend against them like convicted child predator is steeped in ignorance,” Jacques wrote.

She said Bishop failed to put forth a convincing argument for the registry, but did offer “screaming proof of just how insane her illogical fear of guns has diminished her capacity to respect anyone else’s rights or ability to be responsible.”

Jacques facetiously suggested that “we should instead have a directory of smug progressive busybodies who can’t or won’t pass the background checks needed to obtain a concealed carry permit.”

Isn’t that the Democratic Party?
