What until the Black Lives Matter movement hears about this!
A controversial ad featuring a light-skinned Asian woman mocking a second woman with darker skin has forced the Bangkok, Thailand, beauty company responsible for it to quickly apologize, according to the New York Post.
An actress in the ad for a skin whitening product called Snowz laments the loss of her “whiteness.”
“Do you know something? Before I got to where I am right now, the competition was very high,” actress Sirin Horwang says, based on the translation. “It’s not easy to stay here for a long time. And once I stop taking care of myself, everything I have dedicated, [and] the whiteness I have invested in, will be gone.”
“The new kid that will replace me may make me a dead star,” she concludes as another light-skinned actress appears — all the while as Horwang’s skin gets darker and darker.
With a smirk on her face, the “new kid” points to Snowz as the key to her success.
The beauty product’s tagline translates to: “Just being white is enough to make you win,” the Post reported.
The backlash to the ad was so severe, the company quickly released an apology.
“Our company did not have any intention to convey discriminatory or racist messages,” the apology said. “What we intended to covey that self-improvement in terms of personality, skills, and professionality is crucial.”
