Today marks the one year anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, where terrorists stormed the small satirical newspaper publication in Paris and massacred 12 workers in cold blood.
The killings were carried out by radical Islamist extremists over retaliation for a blasphemous magazine covers of Muhammad. While the mainstream media was quick to cover the story of the massacre, most of the largest media outlets refused to publicize the offending picture.
One year later, Charlie Hebdo is at it again. Only the magazine’s anniversary cover depicts a “generalized” or “Westernized” God as a terrorist. Be prepared to see the mainstream media carry the image far and wide, despite previous claims about refusing to publish “offensive” images.
The Associated Press issued a statement saying, “It’s been our policy for years that we refrain from moving deliberately provocative images.”
But that’s not the case with the new cover. According to Mediate.com, the photos were available for editorial purchase for a short time until AP was called out on its hypocrisy.

The New York Daily News makes a good example of how most of the media handled the story at the time:

Of course, the Daily News has been busy making offensive covers ever since. Just yesterday it came up with this:

The hypocrisy is mind numbing. But Americans are used to it, or oblivious to it, either way, the Charlie Hebdo cover has started making its rounds:

So far, only the Vatican has voiced concern.

Certainly criticizing religion is protected under free speech, but it’s the selective criticism that’s most concerning. And cowardly.
As BPR reported last year, there were a handful of brave souls who stood up against the attacks: Defiance! See the cartoons drawn in response to Paris attack
