Trump just played the birther card against Cruz; watch his killer response

In what his critics say is in response to the latest poll numbers in Iowa, Donald Trump played the birther card against Ted Cruz, saying his rival’s Canadian birthplace was a “very precarious” issue.

“I’d hate to see something like that get in his way,” the Republican presidential front-runner said. “But a lot of people are talking about it and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport.”

When asked about the issue in an interview Monday, the real estate tycoon warned GOP voters that Cruz could be vulnerable as the party’s nominee, according to the Washington Post.

“Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: ‘Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?’ That’d be a big problem,” Trump said.

Cruz, who handles criticism as well as anyone, hit back on social media with a heavy dose of humor.

The Texas senator posted a video clip from the iconic 1970s TV sitcom “Happy Days,” depicting character Fonzie jumping over a shark on water skis — an image that has come to represent overkill.

Cruz shrugged the issue off when later asked why he would tweet a video clip.

“And one of the things that the media loves to do is gaze at their navels for hours on end by a tweet from Donald Trump or from me or from anybody else. Who cares?” he said. “Why do it? Because the best way to respond to this kind of attack is to laugh it off and move on to the issues that matter.”

While some on social media are eager to see the two heavyweights lock horns, others were appreciative of Cruz’s good-natured demeanor. Here’s a quick sampling of responses from Twitter:
