CNN’s Wolf Blitzer did his best to corner Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson on the issue of race, but the neurosurgeon was having none of it.
Blitzer asked Carson Thursday what he thought of Rupert Murdoch saying that President Obama wasn’t a “real black president“.
“I believe what he was making reference to was the fact that here was a man who was a black president that the black community was very excited about who came in and whose policies have not really elevated the black community,” Carson said. “There’s more unemployment, more poverty, and I believe that’s what he was really referring to.”
“You believe the president is a real black president, right?” Blitzer persisted.
“I wouldn’t even get into such a conversation,” Carson said, but Blitzer wouldn’t let it go.
“It’s a simple conversation. Is President Obama a real black president?” Blitzer again asked.
“Well, he’s the president and he’s black,” Carson said.
“We’re dealing with semantics, as you know,” said Carson, as Blitzer continued to press the issue. “I’m the last person who wants to play around with semantics and political correctness. Rupert Murdoch said what he said. He apologized because people took it the wrong way. I think there are so many more important issues to deal with.”
