Maine mayor wants to name welfare recipients on public website; taxpayers have the right to know

A Maine mayor is calling for the creation of a website to list the names and addresses of everyone collecting welfare and other government benefits.

Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald, who is running for re-election, made his argument in an op-ed he wrote for the Twin City Times on Thursday, noting that such a website already exists for those receiving earned state pensions.

In Maine there is a website that lists the pension amounts received by everyone who is issued a monthly check by the State of Maine. No privacy here because this is being paid out by the State; accordingly, taxpayers have a right to know.

Yet other recipients of state revenues are shielded. Yes, I am referring to those known as welfare recipients. Why are they treated differently than pensioners? (A rhetorical question).

The answer: our liberal, progressive legislators and their social-service allies have made them a victimized, protected class. It’s none of your business how much of your money they get and spend. Who are you to question it? Just shut up and pay!

He wrote that he and his team would be submitting a bill to make the website happen, along with two other bills, according to Opposing Views.

The other bills would seek to bring the state’s General Assistance into compliance with federal mandates, limiting time on General Assistance to 60 months, and to prohibit the state from paying for any child born after the parent has been accepted into General Assistance.
