The Justice Department took possession of emails from the private server Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton used during her time as secretary of state on Tuesday, and Rep. Trey Gowdy is furious over what they have uncovered so far.
In a statement released Tuesday night, the chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi didnât hold back in his reaction to news that Clintonâs emails included classified information more sensitive to national security than insiders had previously speculated.
The recent revelations confirm the committeeâs early suspicions that Clinton had mishandled classified information by using a secretive personal email system, Gowdy wrote:
âFor months the Select Committee on Benghazi has called on Secretary Clinton to turn over her server to a neutral, detached third party for independent forensic examination. She refused every entreat,â Gowdy said in a statement. âSecretary Clinton said she created this unusual email arrangement with herself for âconvenience.â It may have been convenient for her, but it has been troubling at multiple levels for the rest of the country.
âCongress, the media, the public, private litigants and FOIA requestors were denied access to public documents, and recently the Inspectors General for two separate Executive Branch entities expressed concern about the possible exposure of classified material as a direct result of her decision to eschew the email rules applicable to everyone else and create her own.”
Gowdy then expressed his outrage over the inspector generalâs announcement that the server housed numerous âtop secretâ emails.
âThe IC Inspector General revealed Secretary Clintonâs emails and server contained not just âtop secretâ classified information, but âcompartmentedâ classified intelligence not releasable to foreigners, which must be noted in the timing of this announcement …
âThis is a serious national security issue, and the seriousness of it should transcend normal, partisan politics.â
Yes, it should transcend normal, partisan politics.
But he probably shouldnât hold his breath.
