Bull-in-the-china-shop diplomatic blunders are the norm for Barack Obama. He has damaged himself with a relentless series of misadventures. The American public is seeing an upside-down aspect to the man’s worldview, where he seeks to “lead from behind” so he can be on better terms with our enemies – think Iran and Cuba— than our allies. Under Obama, appeasement is wisdom, capitulation is victory, friends are enemies.
Then again, his diplomatic failures shouldn’t surprise anyone who is paying attention. Obama never developed any skills before he was president, except to ride herd on a small, rag-tag band of community organizers. He has never run anything in his life, making him ill-equipped to lead the most powerful and complex country on earth.
This administration’s diplomatic initiatives have largely been failures. In 2011, Obama was sufficiently stupid to pull out of Iraq and let Islamic butchers rise from their ashes to increase their control over vast portions of both Syria and Iraq. Obama’s mistakes allowed ISIS to bloom again, at the same time he was assuring Americans that the war on terror was nearly won. Jihadists ended up dominating much of Iraq, winning the insurgency against the Iraqi military and putting American-made weapons into ISIS hands.
And yes, after declaring “victory” over al Qaeda and dismissing ISIS as the “jayvee team,” Obama’s “progressive” foreign policies have fueled a growing world disorder.
Back to Syria, where he dithered and backed down after declaring a “red line” regarding dictator Assad’s use of chemical weapons, Obama falsely proclaimed in 2012 that “Assad’s days are numbered.” Adding more injury, in 2013, Obama failed to honor his diplomatic commitments to the Free Syrian Army.
Obama was weak and indecisive in handling the Libyan terrorist situation in 2012, which resulted in the terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi. This tragic Libya debacle spilled over, resulting in Yemen’s current disintegration.
He has been absent from negotiations over Ukraine’s fate, doing nothing more than sending some ready-to-eat meals, while failing to restrain Putin. Any head-to-head negotiations between Putin and Obama would be sad but amusing, as we could watch a trained, seasoned pugilist eat Obama’s lunch.
Obama’s feeble entreaties are empowering China to continue to forge big territorial claims in the South Seas and the Far East, where China is aggressively coveting Taiwan again and suppressing dissenters in Hong Kong.
In Iran in 2009, Obama failed to sanction the ayatollahs who unleashed their militia against innocent civilians. In fact, he has been grossly negligent in enforcing sanctions against Iran, naively claiming recently that he believes Iran “will abide by international norms and rules.”
Obama’s pitiful, failed diplomatic overtures to North Korea have resulted in their leaders stifling a yawn as they resumed atomic testing and launched a ballistic missile in 2012.
Let’s not forget that Obama violated federal law when he failed to inform Congress prior to trading five top “Taliban Dream Team” leaders for Army Sgt. Bergdahl, the deserter. Obama did this while he was weakening the U.S. military, our best bet to curb future Islamist terrorists, by purging hundreds of top military officers and slashing funding.
But perhaps his most dangerous diplomatic failure occurred after he and Secretary of State Kerry failed to secure an Israeli-Arab peace, when they negotiated a catastrophic agreement that will allow Iran to make nuclear bombs within a few years. This was followed by Obama’s strategy of bluster, accusation, and verbal bludgeoning as he now tries to sell his Iranian agreement back home by accusing opponents of his deal to be in bed with Iranian “Death to America” hardliners.
Obama’s Iranian disaster, resulting from his naiveté and lack of experience, has blinded him from seeing that good strategy, not rapport diplomacy, is critical to ensuring America’s containment policies are enforced against one of the most dangerous countries on the globe.
In his motivation to embellish his legacy in the Age of Obama, he has relegated the U.S. to the nadir of its global influence since the 1970s. As stated by The Wall Street Journal, Obama’s foreign policy is lofty in its pronouncements, incompetent in execution, rich in narcissism and dismal in results.
