Surveillance video: FSU quarterback punches woman in the face at a bar, calls it self-defense

Punching a woman in the face in a crowded bar isn’t the kind of highlight video college athletes dream about, but a Florida football player is facing battery charges thanks to a surveillance recording that catches him doing just that last month.

Florida State quarterback De’Andre Johnson was dismissed from the team “effective immediately” Monday night after video surfaced of the June 24 incident, according to NBC News.

Johnson turned himself in at the Leon County Jail on June 30 after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He is out on bail and volunteering at a battered women’s shelter, his attorney, Jose Baez, told NBC News.

The woman Johnson punched suffered bruising near her left eye, swelling, and a cut on her face.

Baez claims Johnson’s actions were in self-defense, that the woman kneed him “in the groin area” and “took another swing” before Johnson punched her.

The woman was also shouting “racial epithets” at Johnson when the quarterback walked up to the bar, Baez told NBC News.

Johnson won Florida’s “Mr. Football” award in 2014
