Pair of brothers fight for memorial for band of brothers lost in WWII

A pair of brothers who fought in World War II are waging a new battle.

This time, they’re trying to reopen the Brooklyn War Memorial that has been closed since 1985.

The brothers, Roy and Jack Vanasco, want the memorial to serve its original purpose of honoring the 300,000 men and women from Brooklyn who fought in World War II,  including the 11,000 who died.

Roy was in the Navy and served aboard the destroyer escort U.S.S. Osterhaus in the Pacific while his brother Jack is a former Army corporal who also fought in the Pacific.

Because the memorial has been closed it has fallen into disrepair.

According to Fox News the cost to fix the memorial enough to reopen would be about $70 million. Those funds would be used for a new roof, air conditioning, new plumbing, new electric, new glass, a ramp, insulation, an elevator and handicapped-accessible bathrooms.

“We think about all of our friends,” Jack told Fox’s Anna Kooiman. “They gave up their lives for us.”

“We’d like to get it open so people can go in and look at those names that are on the wall,” he said.

His brother Roy agreed.

“They’re not here today to have this interview, but I can still see their faces,” he said.

A GoFundMe page has been started to help obtain the financing needed to reopen the memorial.
