University art students forced to take final exam naked to pass; mom is outraged

The mother of one art student at the ultra liberal University of California, San Diego, has complained about the “bare” minimum requirements for passing the course.

According to what the unidentified woman told KGTV-TV, students are required to take their final exam completely in the nude. That’s something she doesn’t want for her daughter, the mom said.

“To blanketly say, ‘You must be naked in order to pass my class’ — it makes me sick to my stomach,” the mom told KGTV-TV.

But the Professor, Ricardo Dominguez, told the station he has gotten naked alongside his students for 11 years and said no one ever complained.

“It’s a standard canvas for performance art and body art,” he told the station. “If they are uncomfortable with this gesture, they should not take the course.”

There are also alternatives to the full monty.

Faculty and former students said students may perform something that is “emotionally naked,” while being fully clothed, to pass the course as well, according to the New York Daily News.

Several people, including former students, spoke out on the KGTV-TV’s Facebook page.

“He’s a pervert and should be fired,” wrote Betty Gilroy. “HUGE FAIL on UCSD’s part.”

“I dropped this class after the first lecture,” added Sandra Soueid.

But Dominguez had his defenders.

“It’s an art class people. And it’s in the syllabus. It’s explained the first day of class. So if u don’t like it don’t take the class. Problem solved. Since when did nudity become so taboo,” wrote Ricky Podejko.

This isn’t the first time Dominguez has sparked controversy.

According to his faculty profile, he was subject to a congressional investigation in 2009-10 for developing a GPS system for cellphones to help immigrants cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

No word yet on whether or not the final exam will be stripped from the curriculum.
