When it comes to President Obama and the truth, the two appear to remain reluctant bed partners.
According to an Investor’s Business Daily editorial, the deal Obama made to release five top Taliban commanders was driven by the president’s desire to empty out Guantanamo Bay and had little to do with Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
In fact, Investor’s Business Daily claimed the captured U.S. soldier now charged with desertion was only thrown into the deal as a sweetener because it was âtoo politically radioactiveâ to get past Congress.
âTruth is, Obama used Bergdahl as a pretext for doing what he always sought to do â empty out Gitmo, national security be damned,â the editorial said.
This despite the White House narrative that the deal was about securing the release of Bergdahl, who now faces charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy for disappearing from his platoon in Afghanistan in 2009.
âWe donât leave men and women in uniform behind,â Obama said when Berghdahl was released.
A theme echoed by White House communications director Jen Psaki, according to the editorial.
“This was about bringing home an individual that had served his country,” Psaki said last week.
Incredulously, Investor’s Business Daily suggested the administration was considering freeing the five terrorists in exchange for the Taliban agreeing to pursue peace — and nothing more.
âĤ IBD has uncovered a series of credible reports from 2012 â as well as a transcript of a candid press conference by then-Afghan President Hamid Karzai â that show the White House originally wanted to give up the Taliban commanders under just one condition: that the Taliban open a political office in Qatar âto conduct peace negotiations.â
