Hundreds of bullets fired into cafe reported as failed Charlie Hebdo-type attack in Copenhagen

A Copenhagen cafe came under siege Saturday in what many people believe was an attempted Charlie Hebdo style attack that left at least one person dead and three injured.

The attack took place at a free speech event called “Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression.” It was organized by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, a controversial artist who has faced many threats after creating a caricature of the Prophet Muhammed in 2007, according to the Associated Press.

A co-organizer of the event, Helle Merete Brix, informed the Associated Press that Vilks, who receives police protection when he is in Denmark, was in attendance but uninjured..

“We have never taken any chances,” Brix said, referring to the massive security presence at the event ”What we have so much been frightened would happen, happened tonight.”

Brix also told CNN she had no doubt that these attacks were due to Vilks portrayal of the Prophet Muhammed with a dog’s body.

“This is why we set up the committee,” she said. “To support Mr. Vilks and support his right to freedom of speech.”

“Everybody, of course, panicked in the room and tried to run,” she said. “We were just hiding and hoping for the best.”

Copenhagen Mayor Frank Jensen tweeted “I am horrified and deeply affected by the shooting at Krudttønden. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”

The mayor of Paris, site of the Charlie Hebdo terror attacks also tweeted her solidarity with the victims and the city. I condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks in Copenhagen today. she tweeted in French.

French ambassador, Francois Zimeray also gave his account of the events to the AFP news agency.

They fired on us from the outside. It was the same intention as Charlie Hebdo except they didn’t manage to get in.

Intuitively I would say there were at least 50 gunshots, and the police here are saying 200.

Bullets went through the doors and everyone threw themselves to the floor. We managed to flee the room, and now we’re staying inside because it’s still dangerous.

The attackers haven’t been caught and they could very well still be in the neighborhood.

The two suspects who fled the scene in a dark Volkswagen Polo are still at large and are considered armed and dangerous, according to Copenhagen police.

Many other tweets poured in, some including pictures of bullet ridden windows of the Krudttoenden cafe.
