Showering is ‘a white people thing,’ ‘Glee’ star says; forced to apologize

The View

Remember, it’s only racist if a white person says it.

While guest-hosting ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday, “Glee” actress Naya Rivera decided to bring race into a discussion on personal hygiene.

“I have to say I have a theory about showering, [which] is that I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics,” Rivera said. “I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing.”

Rivera seemed to realize she just stepped in it, as she tried to backtrack from her remarks.

After pointing out that her mother is half-black, half-Puerto Rican, she said: “She showers every day, so I can say this. But I can say that I am now married to a white man, and he showers a lot. Like, a lot — two, three times a day. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?'”

But viewers took to social media to respond, with more than one willing to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Here are a few examples, as seen on Twitter:

In a tweet responding to the onslaught of criticism, Rivera tried to wash away the controversy:

Appearing again Wednesday on “The View,” the actress apologized for her remarks.

“Showering. Biggest topic in pop culture today, in my opinion. Thanks to me, unfortunately,” Rivera said.

“Yesterday, we were talking about a study that says you’re supposed to shower once or twice every three days. I had an opinion on it that was supposed to be a joke. Apparently it didn’t go over so well.

“It was supposed to be a joke, but I apologize if anyone was offended.”

And it may have been taken as a joke in pre-Obama America, but not at a time when the country is being ripped apart at its seams by race provocateurs out to advance a political agenda.
