Obama addresses Black Caucus: Folks always tell me ‘you’re so great’

To hear President Obama tell it, despite his low approval ratings, everything is coming up roses.

While speaking at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s awards dinner Saturday night, Obama told attendees he is always hearing how great he is.

“All around the country, wherever I see folks, they always say, ‘Oh, Barack, we’re praying for you – boy, you’re so great; look, you got all gray hair, you looking tired. We’re praying for you.’ Which I appreciate…” Obama said.

That may be because Obama only goes before select crowds, but the remark serves to reinforce the charge by critics that he’s out of touch with the folks.

Rejecting the prayers and conceding that there’s not much he can do about his gray hair, the president instead urged people to vote, according to a tweet from BuzzFeed’s Darren Sands:

In a display of terrible timing, just prior to a police officer being shot Saturday in Ferguson, Obama spoke of “a gulf of mistrust” minorities have toward police.

According to a White House transcript of the president’s speech, Obama said he would not comment on the investigation after acknowledging that Michael Brown’s family was in the audience, then added:

“I know that nothing any of us can say can ease the grief of losing a child so soon.  But the anger and the emotion that followed his death awakened our nation once again to the reality that people in this room have long understood, which is, in too many communities around the country, a gulf of mistrust exists between local residents and law enforcement.”

On a lighter note, Obama referenced his recent fashion statement that took the nation by storm. CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller tweeted:
