In a chance moment that changed her life, a Belgium woman dubbed the “most beautiful fan” at the World Cup gained instant notoriety when a picture of the 17-year-old cheering her team went viral.
Then, just as quickly, the adoration was snatched away.
The international cosmetic giant L’Oreal crowned Axelle Despiegelaere fan of the day the moment her picture at the Belgium v. Germany match made the rounds of social media, sending the teenager on a whirlwind adventure.
When Despiegelaere returned to Belgium from Brazil, she made a promotional video for L’Oreal Professionnel Belgique, according to Bleacher Report.
But a social media post brought it all to a screeching halt Thursday.
Someone re-posted a Facebook photo of the teen with a hunting trophy, sparking a public backlash. Posing with a dead animal is often a lightning rod for controversy, and L’Oreal was having none of it.
No sooner had Despeigelaere been L’Oreal’s featured star, her contract was terminated, The Independent reported.
“Hunting is not a matter of life or death, it’s much more important than that,” Despiegelaere wrote in the original Facebook post. “this was about 1 year ago . . . ready to hunt Americans today. haha.”
Animal rights activists immediately vented their outrage.
L’Oreal released a brief statement, saying, according to The Independent:
The spokesperson said that, although the brand was aware of the photograph, it would not comment on whether this was behind the decision to terminate Ms Despiegelaere’s contract. However, they were keen to stress that L’Oréal “no longer tests on animals, anywhere in the world, and does not delegate this task to others.”
Talk about here today, gone tomorrow.
