A high school senior who stirred controversy last year because he didn’t want to cover up his U.S. Marine Corps uniform has been killed in Afghanistan.
Marine Lance Cpl. Brandon Garabrant, 19, of New Hampshire was one of three U.S. service members killed by a roadside bomb Friday, according to CBS affiliate WBZ-TV in Boston.
“The entire State of New Hampshire is devastated by the tragic loss of Lance Corporal Brandon Garabrant, who was bravely serving his nation in Afghanistan,” Gov. Maggie Hassan said in a statement. “Our service men and women courageously sacrifice every day to protect their fellow citizens and defend the enduring value of freedom that is our very core, and in doing so, Lance Cpl. Garabrant made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Garabrant finished boot camp in Parris Island, S.C. before heading home to walk in ConVal Regional High School’s graduation. He wanted to wear his new Marine Dress Blue uniform, but the school denied his request, saying the rules required he wear a cap and gown.
“On behalf of the entire ConVal community I extend my deepest sympathy to Brandon’s family and friends,” ConVal Principal Brian Pickering said in a statement after receiving news of Garabrant’s death . “We are all shocked and deeply saddened by his passing and we are incredibly grateful for his service to our country.”
Garabrant had a resume of someone 10 years older, WBZ-TV reported, listing stints as a youth group singer, volunteer firefighter and an employee at Touchstone Farm.
