Hillary gets grilled by Sawyer! Still says Benghazi ‘more reason’ to run for president; blames experts

Hillary Clinton that she took responsibility Mondayfor securing the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, but then shifted the blame for the 2012 attack to security experts she trusted.

Clinton sat down in an exclusive interview with NBC’s Diane Sawyer just ahead of the release of her new book, “Hard Choices,” covering topics that ranged from Benghazi to Monica Lewinsky to whether the former first lady will make another run for president in 2016.

“Is there anything you personally should have been doing to make it safer in Benghazi?” Sawyer asked, referring to the attack that claimed the lives of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Her role was to give instructions, Clinton said.

“What I did was give very direct instructions that the people who have the expertise and experience in security, apply it,” she said. “I’m not equipped to sit and look at blueprints, to determine where the blast walls need to be or where the reinforcements need to be. That’s why we hire people who have that expertise.”

Sawyer pressed on.

“I wonder if people are looking for a sentence that begins, from you, ‘I should have …,’” Sawyer said. “We saw your face on that tarmac. Something that said, ‘I should have done this differently.’”

She would “give anything on Earth if this had not happened,” Clinton said. “And I certainly would wish that we had made some of the changes that came to our attention to make as a result of the investigation. But I also am clear in my own mind that we had a system and that system, of course, ended with me. I take responsibility, but I was not making security decisions.”

When asked about the Benghazi attack’s impact on her decision on whether to run for president, Clinton said it was more of a reason to throw her hat in the ring than to shy away from a campaign.
